ROBODARSHAN

ABOUT THE SOCIETY:

Robodarshan is a club founded in 2009 to invoke interest in students about robotics. Robodarshan’s motto is ‘there is nothing a bot can’t do. The primary activities of Robodarshan includes conducting lecture sessions on robotics, the lecture sessions are followed by hands-on sessions, where Robodarshan mentors in making a robot for specific tasks. Robodarshan conducts DIY, exclusively for the first-year students of IIEST and a plethora of fun robotics competitions, which goes by the name Automaton, a part of Instruo – the techno-management fest of IIEST. Robodarshan also collaborates with other departments of IIEST Shibpur to organise Robotics events in departmental technical fests, for e.g. Initium(mining), Sphuran(electrical), Impetus (Mechanical).

FLAGSHIP EVENT:

To ignite the spark of robotics, Robodarshan, the robotics club of IIEST Shibpur organizes an annual flagship event called Automaton as a part of Instruo, the annual technical fest of IIEST Shibpur. Robodarshan launches typically five problem statements for this event and each problem statement is turned into a competition. Each competition has its own set of rules, scoring technique and prize money. The prize money is allotted to the winning team and the runners up proportionally. To keep it interesting for amateurs as well as the experienced participants, every year we try to come up with problem statements that range from easy to hard, all the while trying to keep the challenges fresh and thrilling. Thus, each year participants have to come up with bots that possess novel capabilities in order to mitigate the task, like this year we had a manual event that required an amphibious bot capable of traversing through different terrains and through water. We had organized three manual robotics events and two autonomous events this year.
Robotics has the potential to positively transform lives and work practices. It is the technology of tomorrow and that makes it essential for every aspiring engineer to become acquainted with it. Events like Automaton provide just the right platform for this. It allows new students to indulge themselves into something productive and the senior students to hone their skills further. Designing Arenas and fabricating them gives hands-on experience which increases the practical technical skills of a student. Fabricating the arena helps in developing problem solving skills. Moreover, as participants come from different colleges, it gives the students an opportunity to get a wider perspective of this field. The hands-on experience they get, equips them with a better technical understanding of several components and enables them to look beyond the ideal assumptions of laws and equations in textbooks. As most robotics events require team work, besides having a fun and enthusiastic experience, they get to cultivate teamwork, collaboration, communication, management and interpersonal skills.

APPROX. FINANCIAL EXPENDITURE OVER THE SESSION EITHER BY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES FUND OR DEPARTMENTAL EXPENDITURE OR COLLECTION:

Rs. 2,65,000(Includes all expenses including prize money for all the 3 fests).

PLANNED ACTIVITIES OF THE SOCIETY FOR FUTURE:

1. DIY, exclusively for the first-year students of IIEST.
2. Developing prototypes and implementing the projects that have been discussed in Covid-19 Challenge.
3. Participating in All-India Competitions like ROBOCON, SDC.

POINT OF DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE:

1. This year we have tried to take part in All-India Competitions like ROBOCON
(To design and manufacture 2 robots capable of playing rugby).
2. We had few brainstorming sessions on how we, team Robodarshan can aid in the Covid-19 crisis.
3. Sessions were conducted focused on current robotics development in the world, aimed towards helping the members develop innovation and problem-solving skills.
4. The members were given training and encouragement to represent the college in events conducted in other colleges, to develop confidence and to compete.

GUIDANCE FOR THE JUNIOR YEARS:

As a robotics club, it is important we take part in international robotics challenges like ROBOCON, SDC. These challenges make students think in innovative ways. We should always try to improve, always challenge us to be better.
